The Warmth of Light (1 John 1:5)

“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)

Often in our prayers, we praise God for what He does. We praise God for His love, His faithfulness, and His mercy towards us. These are good things on which we build our life, but there is more to God than what he does for us. God is as different from us as light is from darkness. Before the creation of the world, God was infinitely glorious. In the darkness of eternity, God’s majestic holiness shined forth in all its splendor. The Westminster Shorter Catechism says that “the chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever” because God is the most valuable to us long before he does anything for us.

Behind his love lies his infinite power; behind his faithfulness lies his incomprehensible life; behind his mercy lies the endless depths of his wisdom. Where dark clouds linger over each human promise and commitment made, God is light. Where each of our earthly pleasures are tinged with the long shadow of sin, God is light. Where death’s dark hour knocks at our hearts, in him is no darkness, no doubt, no distrust. Behind the perfect promises of God lies the perfections of God in and of himself. While the shadows of this world are fleeting, we can simply bask in the rays of His marvelous light.
