Can You Spot the Difference?
“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—” (Galatians 1:6)
Once, a pastor asked his Sunday School class if they believed the gospel. Hands shot up across the room! But then, the pastor handed out sheets of paper with the express command to “write it down.” The terror-stricken class hesitantly wrote down what they were so quick to affirm. (For the record, the church was composed of a faithful pastor and equally as faithful members.)
Now, as we turn to Paul, we should all be aware that a different gospel (which really is not a gospel) exists in this world. With much sorrow, we hear it proclaimed in pulpits around the world. But can we spot the difference? Are we who confess to believe in the gospel able to put it into words? Instead of a long-winded article this week, I propose a project. Take your pen and paper in hand, and write out the gospel in 3-5 sentences. You can bring it by the office, send me an email, hire a messenger pigeon – it doesn’t matter! Next week, I will explain the gospel. Let us compare!
